Power Factor Correction: Boost Converter?

Hello :)

For active power factor correction technique, most popular choice is boost converter.
I think any topology can be used for pfc, Why is Boost converter most popular choice, why not a Buck converter?

A PFC input stage requires to draw a sine current waveform from mains input, down to ideally zero voltage. That's only possible with a boost converter and a DC bus voltage above peak value of input.
 

There is buck PFC controller UCC29910A. Read slup264 from TI about this kind of PFC.

The idea behind the buck PFC implementation is to reduce harmonics currents to an amount tolerated by the standards instead of eliminating it. Calculating the UCC29910A example design shows that it can achieve a power factor of 0.9 as claimed but not necessarily keep the harmonic current limits. That's the problem when trying to clear the bar very tightly.

PFC is possible with many of the topologies with forcing some changes into their topologies but as "FvM" said the best implementation is being achieved by boost converter . boost converter can limit harmonics as well and the input components can be highly reduced so the current through the input will be changed from the deformed wave into the sine wave .
