[SOLVED] DC motor reversed to make generator

hi

i bought a dc motor from junk yard ...i m reversing dc motor to dc generator ... motor working fine...as i rotate the shaft dc voltage is being produced..

first i need to know rotation vs voltage produce relation...

second and most worst thing. when i m trying to interface an axle (so that my system becomes water turbine) very low voltage is produced... i realized even though i rotate the system with reasonably high rpm .. but at the shaft this is very low to produce voltage.... now i am interfacing pulley system .. but cant understand how...

any guidance would be welcomed
 

How many wires are coming out of the motor?. Has got a permanent magnetic field? If the motor has a permanent magnet in it, it will produce a voltage directly in proportion to its speed. If there are no magnets, then it will rely on the actual output current to produce the magnetic field, so loading it with a resistor will actually increase the output voltage.

Doesn't sound plausible at first sight.

A regular PMDC motor has only two wires, connecting to the brushes. It's probably a different motor type.

Review type plate, voltage specification. Try to run the device as a motor in a first step.
 

As for your pulley/ belt/ gear ratio, the aim is to use the highest ratio that will still let your turbine spin the generator.

The more current you try to draw from the generator, the harder it becomes to spin. As a result the turbine slows down.

It will take some experimentation to find a gear ratio where you obtain maximum torque from your turbine. That is the point at which the generator will be able to provide maximum current.
