h bridge power stage

any body help me about why IGBT not widely used in H-Bridge of DC MOTOR
and if there are sites about that topic pls send it
thanks

delay with h bridge igbt

IGBT is capable of handling higher power compared to power mosfet. The gate control circuits of IGBT and power mosfet are quite similar as both are voltage controlled devices. If the power rating of DC motor is high, IGBT should be used.

igbt + h bridge

If you are talking about 12 volt DC motors, may be one reason of not using IGBT is the command voltage that's usually 15 - 20 volts.

IGBT is slower than MOSFET
IGBT is more expensive than MOSFET
but IGBT has higher current and voltage ratings.
for high current, high voltage(>=300v) and low frequency(max 20-30khz) applications IGBT has been using. for motor control and ups applications IGBTs has been using widely(in high power applications-approximately higher than 2-3kw-)....
one of the important paremeters of he IGBT is withstand short circuits for a while. so you can use semiconductor fuse to protect your power stage against any malfunction.....

Re: H-Bridge and IGBT

IGBT is expensive than MOSFET . What price of IGBT in market ?

Re: H-Bridge and IGBT

I think the cheapest discrete modules of igbts are 6-7$ while mosfets are below 1$. Higher power igbts and packed modules are much more expensive.

H-Bridge and IGBT

Could anyone enumerate some types of IGBT or the manufactory?

Re: H-Bridge and IGBT

probably most popular is international rectifier. www.irf.com they are also the most expensive. also comes to mind is fairchildsemi.com they both give free samples :)

Re: H-Bridge and IGBT

to obtain free sample one must have a company email, fairchildsemi no longer accept generic (free email)

Re: H-Bridge and IGBT

onsemi.com also does free samples. they are also real cheap (but you get what you pay for)

btw - the reason you see mofsets in many H-Bridge configurations is not because one technology is better than the other. it is simply a mater of application & the better choice device. also, when dealing with inductive loads like a motor (common applicadtion for H-Bridge configuration) you need some way to free-wheel the stored energy. this is where anti-parallel diodes are used. with mosfets, this comes free, with IGBTs you have to pay extra for it as an external component soldered across the collector-emittor or, if you're lucky, you can find one that has it built in - but again this costs extra.

Re: H-Bridge and IGBT

thank u for all , but i think also the time on delay and time off delay are different
but , if i used MOSFET ,iwould must used free wheel diode.

thank u Mr.cool and others
