Hi
I think that power conditioner may be the more usual term, and they're not just needed for supplying an air conditioner. If a device that needs well regulated power is used in an area/region which has significant variation in line voltage, then it will benefit from being fed via a power conditioner.

Take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_conditioner
