How to get AC and DC coeffiecients from a discrete wavelet transformed image?

In my reference paper it is given as the DC components are encoded with rice codes and AC components with Bit Plane Encoder.My doubt is how to get the DC and AC components from the transformed image,if its for (512*512)image.Is approximation coefficients similar to that of DC components and AC components similar to that of detailed coefficients?
