Guys,

Why can't I use a function for this code :

If I use this code, it's running as I want to be
Code:
lcd_ini()
{
  		data_port(0x30);

		//next command
        data_port(0x38);
		en = 1;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rs = 0;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rw = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);
		en = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);

        //next command
	   	data_port(0x0F);
		en = 1;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rs = 0;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rw = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);
		en = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);

		//next command
		data_port(0x80);
		en = 1;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rs = 0;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rw = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);
		en = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);

}

Test without function.jpg

but when I replace to :
Code:
lcd_control_comm()
{
	    _delay_ms(10);
		en = 1;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rs = 0;
		_delay_ms(10);
		rw = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);
		en = 0;
		_delay_ms(100);
}

lcd_ini()
{
  		data_port(0x30);

         lcd_control_comm()

        //next command
	   	data_port(0x0F);
        	lcd_control_comm()

		//next command
		data_port(0x80);
        	lcd_control_comm()

}

I lose the data in "data_port" , does anyone have a clue?

Anyway here's the define :
Code:
 // structure to allow bit field operations, name conversions: PORTA.0 -> PORT_A.b0  PORTB.7 -> PORT_B.b7
typedef struct{ uint8_t b0:1;
                uint8_t b1:1;
                uint8_t b2:1;
                uint8_t b3:1;
                uint8_t b4:1;
                uint8_t b5:1;
                uint8_t b6:1;
                uint8_t b7:1; } bits;

// define all the ports of your microcontroller, add more ports depending on the available mcu ports
#define PORT_A (* (volatile bits *) &PORTA)
#define PIN_A (* (volatile bits *) &PINA)
#define DDR_A (* (volatile bits *) &DDRA)

#define PORT_B (* (volatile bits *) &PORTB)
#define PIN_B (* (volatile bits *) &PINB)
#define DDR_B (* (volatile bits *) &DDRB)

#define lcd_data_pin  PORTD
#define en  PORT_A.b0
#define rs  PORT_A.b1
#define rw  PORT_A.b2

I'm using AVR Studio 4.

Here's the main loop
Code:
int main (void)
{

	DDRA = 0xFF;
	DDRD = 0xFF;

  while(1)
    {
		// then you can use specific bits like this to write or read specific bits

        lcd_ini();
    }
}

Any experiences or ideas will be very appreciated, thank you

Not asked in your post, but the signal sequence of LCD control lines is completely wrong.

Not asked in your post, but the signal sequence of LCD control lines is completely wrong.
It's wrong because I only put it as a test...to see if it's sending signal or not....since it was blank before it...

Where is data_port(0x30) definition?

it's a function..
Code:
data_port(char data1)
{
	lcd_data_pin = data1;

}

- - - Updated - - -

It's pretty simple on MCS51
Code:
void lcd_command(unsigned char comm) // function to send command to LCD
{
lcd_data_pin=comm;
en=1;
rs=0;
rw=0;
delay(1);
en=0;
}

void lcd_data(unsigned char disp) // function to send data on LCD
{
lcd_data_pin=disp;
en=1;
rs=1;
rw=0;
delay(1);
en=0;
}

and it works lke a charm.....

I give you guys the complete picture, hopefully you can understand what I mean,
Code:

#include <util/delay.h>

typedef struct{ uint8_t b0:1;
                uint8_t b1:1;
                uint8_t b2:1;
                uint8_t b3:1;
                uint8_t b4:1;
                uint8_t b5:1;
                uint8_t b6:1;

to specify the clock frequency use
#define _XTAL_FREQ 8000000
That would be for XTAL oscillators and speed equal or above 1MHz. The frequency is specified in Hz.

Anyway, if you're looking for a good LCD driver, may I suggest to use mine? I made one able to work in both 4 and 8 bit mode and it's very simple to use. You only have to properly set the LCD pins to use and the LCD settings, then call LCD_Initialize() and you'll have your LCD ready to work. The driver is tested and it's working* on PIC 16F84(A) and 16F876(A). If you're interested, here you are:
https://www.edaboard.com/blog/1817/
* I'm not sure which C compiler are you using but, if it's not the HiTech C compiler, make sure you replace the __delay_us() and __delay_ms() functions with proper ones

I'm using AVR Studio 4, it's AVR GCC I suppose, thanks for suggestion,
any ideas with this compiler ?

Altough it's not the primary topic of this thread, I would prefer to use correct LCD bus timing. It's pretty clear that RS and RW must be stable before asserting E.

What does it say? PORTA isn't defined as a bit structure with a member B0. Why are you thinking it is? Is it defined in io.h?

You have used an apparently valid construct for AVR port bits in post #1.

The problem is to understand which processor specific header files are provided with a compiler, which headers need to be included, what's the required syntax. Some compilers have processor specific C extensions, e.g. the sbit with C51.

You'll hardly find out th eright syntax by copying arbitrary examples from other processors. Either refer to WinAVR examples or read the manuals and help files.

With the code on Post no #16,

It happens the same when I did before,
There's no data, please see d0,d1,d2.....
no data.jpg

What do you reckon for this case ?
thanks

All your problem is because of the LCD pin defines.

http://winavr.scienceprog.com/example-avr-projects/avr-gcc-4-bit-and-8-bit-lcd-library.html

Try changing these

#define en PORT_A.b0
#define rs PORT_A.b1
#define rw PORT_A.b2

to

#define en PA0
#define rs PA1
#define rw PA2

see how pin names are defined in io.h

If the above doesn't work then try

#define en PINA0
#define rs PINA1
#define rw PINA2

If this also doesn't help then download and install AVR Studio 6.1 and try my code with that.

I have installed WinAVR and AVR Studio 4. Tell me how to configure AVR Studio to use gcc compiler for project. Explain all steps for creating a atmega128 project. Tell me how to set toolchain for the project. I will try the code and see why it is not working. Screenshots will be helpful.

I have posted hex for both 8 bit and 4 bit. It is for 8 MHz Clock and ATMega128. The connection should be as shown in Proteus file. If it does not work all you have to do is increase the delays in lcd initialization routine. I have not tested them on hardware.

You selected AT90CAN128. Earlier you used ATMega128.

Code works without any problem. Tested. See attached file. Compiled in Atmel Studio 6.0
