purposes of multiple pins for grounding

i found that in many ICs there are more than one ground?
why? is it not sufficient with just one ground pin? or they (the IC designers)
just love to fill up the pins requirement (for any packaging)?
what improvement can we get by spreading many pins for grounding purpose?
 

The parasitic inductance is reduced. There is a maximum current limit for bonding wires.
 

Sometimes (like A/D and D/A converters) the chip is made of two or more different sections (Analog and Digital for example) and each section has its own power supply and ground.
 

I think, if there are many ground pins, the impedance of the 'current-return-path' to ground will be lower, and in turn will help to minimize ground bounce.
 

Multiple ground pins also ensure good performance with maximum noise immunity.
 

Multiple gnd means there are multiple paralell connections between gnd on chip and gnd on board,which in turn reduce the impedence. It will greatly reduce the voltage difference between gnd on chip and gnd on board especially when large currents.
 

In addition to the previously mentioned
reasons, some chips use multiple ground
leads for more heat dissipation.
