Hi guys,

I am doing a project in which i have to connect some sensors to a can bus. So, i need to have separate microcontrollers with each sensor which could read the sensor and put it on the can bus. Someone suggested me to use PIC microcontrollers for connecting each sensor to the CAN bus.

I am totally new to use PIC and need some help in selecting the right microcontroller. Can someone tell me where should i start? which development board should i buy for that?
If i have to make some circuit can someone share the schematic?

What i need to do is to make a few circuits with microcontrollers (or some ready made development boards with microcontrollers) and attach them with the sensors.
Any solution?

Thank you very much

Regards,
Iltaf Khalid

Essentially a minimal CAN implementation requires only a PIC MCU and a CAN transceiver (MCP2551).

Microchip Connectivity Solutions

Microchip offers two versions of standalone CAN development boards:

They also offer a PICtail and PICtail plus daughter board which can be utilized with several other Microchip development boards:

Of course, Microchip provides schematics and Gerber files, therefore depending on your level of experience, budget and time allotment, you could consider designing your own.

Another option, depending on the types of sensors and their distribution is the standalone CAN node controller, MCP250XX series.

The MCP250XX devices operate as 1/0 expanders for
a Controller Area Network (CAN) system supporting
CAN V2.0B active with bus rates up to 1 Mb/s
The MCP250XX allows a simple CAN node to be imple-
mented without the need for a microcontroller.

Understanding the MCP250XX Devices

I own and use many of the Microchip CAN development boards, I find the older PICDEM CAN-LIN 2 Board the most flexible.
