controlling the width of puls by voltage

how can i control the width of square wave by varying the voltage without using 555 timer ic.
actually i am using potentiometer and mirocontrollor.
if there is another component required then plese mention.

use the timer of the microcontroller to set the period and invert a digital output on each timer 'tick'
 

i have done it but how the width of puls will control by "voltage"?
if i just write a timer program then width will fixed.
