How to determine the stability of Inverted Pendulum?

Inverted Pendulum

I know how to work on phase portrait and to find the stability of the system can any one tell me how we can apply energy methods to determine the stability of the system.

You could apply Lyapunov theory. You can find information about that in hxxp://www.ece.ucsb.edu/~hespanha/ece229/ lectures 7 and 8.
