Greetings all i'm new here and was looking for some help with wiring up some running lights for my Toyota 1994 mr2.

I wanted to use the fog lights for running lights.Right now I cant use them because they only come on when the head lights are on (they are on a separate on/off switch)

The law says they must come on when the car is started automatically.

What id like to do is be able to turn them off or on at night though. Is it possible to do this and still have them come on automatically when the car starts the next time, even if ive turned them off, say the night before? Any help with a possible circuit would be appreciated very much.

In my country fog lights are prohibited for use without fog, and cannot be used as standard light due different lens and dispersion of lights.

Of course if you whant that that is possible not problem.

I'm prity sure that law say :

"The law says they must come on when the car is started automatically."

but for main beam light (standard lights).

You can make some dark sensing switch with high histeresis or some switch which sense running alternator voltage and then turn this lights what you whant.

Logically you need a switch with memory that can switch off/on externally in series with existing wiring but returns to NC or normally closed contacts when the ignition goes Off/On. A momentary switch makes sense here to "reset" the light "state" when "on" by default so that the car state 0 to 1 turns the light on regardless of switch.

THis can be a momentary switch to activate a self-latching relay or a toggle relay. or a flip flop with Q driver in a toggle mode (/2 counter) with power on reset.

It all depends on your soldering skills and ability to built something or the budget to buy a latching power relays. .. your choice

Presumably this old Toyota does not have lamp sensors to alert driver of a faulty fog lamp ??
