Hello, is everybody ok?

Does anybody know if it's possible to build a PIC programmer like PICKit2 using PIC18F14K50 instead of PIC18F2550?

In my city is very hard to find the 2550 or 4550 and they are so much expensive. However, 14K50 is very cheap.

Whether someone knows an other PIC that I can use to build a PIC programmer feel so free to tell us.

Many thanks and regards,

Pedro Rosa!

For good reason the PIC18F14K50 has half the FLASH and about a third the RAM of the PIC18F2550.

Have you tried to recompile the PICkit2 source for the PIC18F14K50? Will it fit within the 16KB 0fFLASH and 768B of RAM of the PIC18F14K50?

Another possible issue is I believe the PIC18F14K50 is actually a 3.2V device with a built-in LDO regulator.

Do you have to use a DIP package or can you work with a Quad?

Hello, BigDog, are you fine?

First of all thank you so much for having answered me too fast.

What Do I have to compile? Here I have the firmware sources files and the bootloader too.

About the encapsulation, I could make a DIP adapter but I really need to know whether it's possible.

When I arrive at home I gonna try to recompile.

Many thanks and regards :D

Hi,

The Pk2 program takes up most of the 32KB memory on a 2550 so with only 16K on the 14K50 there is no chance.

What country are you in, surprised the 2550 or 4550 are so expensive ?

As often said in these forums buying a ready made genuine PK2 can be the better and cheaper option, though there are some good ready made Pk2 clones out there as well.

If you need only one piece, you can order sample from Microchip (I don't think it's sampling service abuse, because thanks to that sample you will use their other products :) )

EDIT:
That is - if your country doesn't have some extremly screwed up customs law.

I live at Belo Horizonte, the main city of Minas Gerais (one of 27 Brazilian States). Here I have found 18F2550 and 18F4550 so much expensive. They coust US$14 and US$18, respectively. At eBay I have found about US$4 and US$6.

I will try to make an order at Microchip's website to get a sample but I don't know whether they send to Brazil.

Many thanks, people.

Here are a list of major distributors of Microchip products in Brazil:

Avnet do Brazil

Bevian Comercial e Importadora LTDA

Farnell-Newark

**broken link removed**

Terceirizacao Comercio E Tecnologia Em Semicondutores Ltda.

Mouser and Future Electronics also have offices in San Paulo, use their main websites:

Future Electronics Brazil

Mouser Electronics - South America

And here's Microchip's Brazil Distributor Page:

Looks you should have no problem ordering samples from Microchip or purchasing their products through Microchip Direct.

Hi,

Might be wrong ,but seem to remember speaking to some guys from Brazil about Pics a couple of years ago and sure that they could not get free samples from Microchip - seems there are quiet a few countires Microchip will not ship to, though perhaps today things may have changed if they have a bigger presence in Brazil.

At the price of $18 just for a pic chip, for almost the same money I would be tempted to buy a complete Pickit2 Clone from Sure Electronics, see their prices via Ebay just search on " Pickit2 "

The main disadvantage of a diy version is the lack of automatic voltage sensing / adjustment, plus all the time and trouble to build one really is not worth it, much better to have a ready made reliable progammer /debugger and put you efforts in to the actual pic projects - much more fun !

I agree for the money, time and trouble purchasing a genuine or well design clone of a PICkit or ICD makes a lot of sense.

After looking over some of the prices of Microchip Products from the Brazilian Distributors I posted previously, I understand the issue Plateau is experiencing. The Brazilian Farnell-Newark Office is selling the PIC18F2250 in a DIP package for over $12 USD.

Welcome to the world of global markets and large trade surpluses.

I wonder how much of a hammering items received at their Customs Office will receive?

Hi,

Well for me a Sure Pickit2 would be free of any import / custom charges as our limit is GB £18 / US $29

However even if it was over your local import limit it would still probably get though ok as many far east suppliers are well aware of your local tarrifs and mark the customs form with a value below your local limit, - naughty but nice !

The irony is the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was just up here in this country discussing some of these trade issues.

@Plateau Are you a student? If so, Microchip offers students 25% off their development tools who have an academic email address.

Also keep an eye on the following website, it lists current Microchip specials and discounts. For example, Microchip was selling the PICkit3 in the Asian market for RMB88/US$13.99, that is 70% off list.

I've also contacted a friend who lives in Brazil and asked for any recommendation he may have.

Hi Big friend,

As I said, I dont´t work anymore with PIC familly core, than my sugestions could be obsolete, due most brasilian electronic suppliers don´t survive long time.

Plateau,

I could sugest you access ASM51 forum, where you can find many persons who works with PIC familly ( I´m even moderator for some topics there ).
Hope this can be usefull.

I've researched Microchip Direct shipping policy. They ship to five or six South American Countries, unfortunately Brazil is not on their list.

So it look like you are correct wp100.

Hello Big, fine?

I'm student of Computer Engineering at Federal Center for Technological Education. I gonna ask my supervisor how can I make an academic email because I know it's possible but I never made one. After I have got the email, do you know what I should do?

The customs policy in Brazil is a little confuse. We have to pay a big fee (60%) for any product imported from any country, excepted the members of MERCOSUL.

Hiho, André, fine?

At ASM51 forum, is your nickname andre_teprom too? I gonna reasearch at ASM51 for some tips about PIC family. Thank you so much.
