I read that we have a multiplexer in FDM. But I couldn't find the reason why we should have a multiplexer. It's seems to be reasonable to have a commutator in FDM but not a multiplexer right? Only in TDM it is reasonable to have a multiplexer, right?

Thanks in advance.

"multiplexing (also known as muxing) is a method by which multiple analog message signals or digital data streams are combined into one signal over a shared medium."
In that sense, Both TDM and FDM is multiplexing....

Now,
"One of FDM's most common applications is cable television. Only one cable reaches a customer's home but the service provider can send multiple television channels or signals simultaneously over that cable to all subscribers"

Multiplexing doesn't means it should always contains a rotary switch....

Have a look at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexing
