I would like to get some profesional advice from you all on how to calculate an object distance from camera using the image captured from webcam. I will be using Matlab to produce the result.

I am greatly appreciate help from you all. Thanks

Thanks..this webpage quite useful..any matlab coding related info still? Thanks

By the way, I woundn't want to use laser to create the center point. Do you know how to get the center point in Matlab?

You will need both the centre point of the camera and the laser pointer to make this algorithm work

Distance measurement using webcam without using laser point

May I know anyway for me to measure an object distance from webcam without applying laser point? I am currently trying to work this out using MATLAB software.

I am greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks

Re: Distance measurement using webcam without using laser point

What is your algorithm? ; a camera gives bearing(azimuth and elevation) data only

Bassa..The question isn't same..but thanks for your reply..

Klystron, I have no algorithm..My project is to detect obstacles helping blind people to navigate..I am thinking using laser might point to other people eyes..not so useful..

A camera does not provide range data , it provides angle data in azimuth and elevation
If you can pick up a know scaled object, you can with trigonometry scale all other objects.
Submarines use TMA (Time Motion Analysis ; by moving to a new observation point and re-taking the bearing only data

oh I see..Thanks for your advices..Greatly appreciate them..
