Please tell me how to connect pin no 3 of 16x2 LCD with variable resistor of 10k? How to interface 16x2 LCD with AT89C51.gif

Can you not follow the circuit diagram?

On the diagram, LCD pin 1 connects to ground, pin2 connects to +5V and pin 3 is your contrast connection.

You connect one end of the variable resistor to +5V, the other end to Ground, and the middle wiper contact to pin 3 on the LCD.

You could physically connect the variable resistor leads at the LCD pins 1 and 2 for ground and +5V, or connect them somewhere else to your supply lines. It does not matter.

Actually, it is usually better to include a fixed resistor as well, but for now let's just get it working for you as the diagram shows.

seriously? you have a schematic!

take your 10k variable resistor, find out which two pins are the opposite ends of the resistor (hint: the value of resistance doesn't change across them when the slider is moved, or wiper rotated - depending on whether it is rotary or linear) connect one of the ends to ground the other to supply (+5V). Your spare pin (the one that if you look at the resistance through this pin, to either of the other two pins, can vary) connects to pin 3 of your LCD.
