I am using itr9909 (infra red transmitter receiver ) to find the location of an obstacle . The problem is that it only work for very short range (up to 12 cm only). While i want to extend the range to 3 ft -5 ft . Please help me in this regard. Is their any way i can achieve my required range using IR transmitter receiver. IF NO, then suggest which type of sensor would be efficient ??

Unlikely that you'll get that much range out of a simple IR set. Ultrasound is probably the better way to go for that distance.

Some options here. I worked on a robot for a class that used #2, the Seeed ranger.

Well the Cost is also a factor that i can't neglect. I had a look at these sharp sensors before . But they are way out of ma budget. Please Tell me about ultrasonic sensor , Are they also costly. I have never worked with ultrasonic sensor!! But how to use them. Please help me in this case !
