If you feel you can expand your knowledge beyond existing in the science, go for it. The title is not important- you are allowed to pursue your ideas in a Ph.D. study which offers a possibility to achieve a breakthrough in a science you love. The freedom of doing something special is the idea.

I wish you a good tutor and good luck! I was lucky with the best tutor I can imagine. After I asked him what he recommended me to study for the rigorous examination, the answer was:"Go and read something"!
Over a year I read everything I could, and passed my exam before all other candidates. I had at least six or seven ideas to pursue, and I spent my study time fighting with myself, fighting for my family. But I persevered and what I learned then served me next 35 years during all research I did. And my students loved how I could explain complex things, easily and by playing games. I learned most by simple experiments, and I recommend this to anyone.

Good luck!
