Hi, all

Is it possible do make the power line (220V,50Hz) as the medium for RS-232 full dupplex communication? Any one have implemented this?
Please share your knowledge and opinion.

Thx + Rgds,

Tr2000

Hi,

I don't think it is possible because the:

1.freq is not right
2.to ampltide modulate the signal. you need to send a large voltage to the line
3.the 50Hz is fixed as one of the 3 lines is neutral

Correct me if anything is wrong. Thanks.

Hi Ruggine,

That is exactly what I mean, but with RS232 protocol instead of USB or ethrnet protocol. Is there anyone design it with RS232? Please share the design, shematic & firmware.

Thx + Rgds,

I found a application sample in a application note from Phillips for the IC NE567/SE567 on page 12. Maybe this will help you.

I think you mean bidirectional RS232 and not full duplex. Full duplex means that both sides can transmit simultaneously, like a telephone - this is usuallly accomplished in data networks by using different frequencies. Half duplex means each side takes turns transmitting, like a push-to-talk walkie talkie. Bidirectional half duplex allows each side to talk, but only one-at-a-time (this is the way RS232 computer data exchange normally happens).

There are several power line modem solutions that are available, depending on whether you want to build something yourself or buy ready made products. Take a look at:
