Would it be safe/practical to connect 5v to the wrist to complete a circuit when the finger tips touch a metal plate?

I think body offer much high resistance ....so u r circuit will not get complete at all at such a low voltage of 5v ......better to use metal kind of piece

Safe? Yes.

Practical? That depends on the exact nature of the circuit you wish to complete. If the circuit needs a very low crurrent then it may work.

You have nothing to lose by trying.

Well it would be safe, be sure that the distance between the wires connected to your skin are atleast 1mm apart just to be sure that they wont short-out. When you build your circuit and it doesnt function, vary the distance between the wires because this may lessen the resistance effect of your skin.

A proximity detector is an alternate method.

Or it may be sufficient merely to touch one input pin. This generally introduces 60 cycle hum in an amplifier.
