I'm Trying to get a temperature reading for a project from the brake pads on a car, i have been trying to find out about IR non-Contact sensors, how they work and how to make one?
has anyone got any ideas?
my questions are really.. do i have to use a thermopile sensor? or can i use an IR LED? and then how do i make it a sort of linear output..? but thats for further down the line..
Thanks in anticipation
Chris

Ambient temperature (and slightly above) thermal radiation is so called "far" IR (7 -15 µm wavelength) and needs respective sensors and far IR transmissive optics. Thermopile is basically right. You'll find masses of information about contactless temperature measurement on the internet, I suppose.

i found a couple of thermopile sensors on the farnell website, but they only do -20>+100 deg C, i need something like 0-1000 degrees.. slight increase ha
theres a bit of stuff on the internet, not much, though maybe i need to change my searching parameters
