hello!!! i have selected this project as recommended by you bt i am facing many problems regarding the selection of suitable module.we have searched a module which is using usb port instead of serial port and it is much cheaper than others but the problem is that we have studied everything related to serial port so should we go for it or not?? if you can ecommend any other than it will become for us to chose the right one.
secondly can you kindly tell how should we start communication between microcontroller(PIC18F248) and GPS module serially.

Buddy! it's good to know you are working on some projects. congrats..
which module are you working with? who recommended you some project? which project is it?
what kind of problems are you facing? HW or SW?
Which interface gives you more head ache on PIC18F248?
please post your thread very clearly. so that you can get quick solution..

hi embedsys!
i m working on the project "vehicle tracking using GPS and GSM/GPRS"... i m facing problems in chosing a suitable module..we have studied research papers regarding GM862-GPS and found it very relevant to our project but it is very expensive.
Second problem is whether tcp/ip stack is built in the module or we have to make it?
Third problem is how to start the interfacing between GPS module and micro controller kindly help us out how to start the programming.

Hi naseer
If you are going for solution based on modules, you have to consider the following things:
1. you have to make a PCB where your module is going to sit.
2. your chosen microcontroller should support the module
3. you have to take care of architecture, schematic, layout, pcb fabrication, assembly and testing on hardware side
4. Also you have to concentrate on architecture, driver devolepment and APIs, testing.
Better you go for some EVM on vehicle tracking using GPS and GSM/GPRS.. use your brain on the application side.

GM862-GPS is good one for GPS tracking.. please read the attached HUG manual. so that you may know some idea on serial communication of the module and PIC18F248.
All the best.

hey embedsys!

Actually we dont knw anything abt the project..and if we are using SIM900D or Holux GR-89 then which is the suitable microcontroller for it..And kindly tell us that whethr TCP/IP stack is built-in these modules or not??And we have studied alot abt this project but have no idea where PCB is being used??

kindly elaborate your 3rd and 4th points...

Hi,
I would recommend SIM300/SIM900 module for GSM. And RoyalTek REB-1315 GPS modue. They are both cheap. And SIM300/SIM900 both have in build TCP/IP stack.
But if you have plans to use FTP or HTTP later then go for SIM900.
As far as controller is concerned, There are plenty of options. If you have any experience of any of the controller like PIC or AVR then i would say stick to that family, else choose any one lets ay PIC18LF6720 might be a good option.

Regards,
Salman.

Hi naseer
my suggestion would be sim900D/sim300
see this thread :https://www.edaboard.com/threads/208740/
Also for schematics/design: https://obrazki.elektroda.pl/80_1302534945.jpg
Hardware support: www.mt-system.ru/documents/sim900d_hd_v1.02.pdf

SIM900D is having in-built TCP/IP stack. moreover you can go for any controller which is having UART interface. hence SIM900D supports and you are also familiar with Serial comm.
If you are a student who is doing project for final year curriculum, then go for sim900D evb.. write some application and demo it to your supervisor. finish your project successfully. all the best

Hi all,

we have decided to chose GSM/GPRS module "SIM900D"..Now we have confusion regarding the selection of GPS module..Our supervisor is saying that Holux GR-89 is good enough for us but you people are suggesting some other modules..What are the problems we will be facing using the said module because we have to convince our supervisor also..

Second issue is whether we have to use GPS and GSM/GPRS on both sides i.e the tracking server and the targeted vehicle or to use it only on one side i.e in the vehicle.. because we studied in the research paper that these modules have to be present on both the sides but our supervisor is saying that we need these modules only on the vehicle side..

If your supervisor says use Holux GR-89 then use GR-89, it is a good module. GPS modules usually are almost similar in giving data formats and signal gains, a bit of difference arises in some RF characteristics.
2ndly you only need GPS and GSM on one side and that is in the vehicle. You don't need them in server.

hello
thanks for reply tell me kindly help me in these things
1)what is the range of these modules...
2)how to do google maping & make a website or server... which software we have to use...

plzreply as soon as possible

Hi everyone,

I m new to edaboard. I m starting a project based on vehicular tracking using GPS/GSM technologies.. I ve no prior experience with these modules.. Please suggest a good module for an amateur lik me.. GPS and GSM module which can be easily programmed.... thank you

Ublox was a very good GPS modules. but it was a serial RS232 interfaced module. use a serial to USB converter for working with usb.
