I've just purchased a SIM300 GSM/GPRS board. The board has a DB9 serial interface however my laptop does not support serial interface. Therefore I purchased a serial to USB converter cabe. Now the problem is that windows detects only the cable and not the SIM300 modem. I cant send AT commands. Please Help...

Hello mrinalmani ,
Check whether the USB to Serial cable's CTS and RTS pins are working or not. Otherwise you can short the CTS and RTS pin onthe SIM300 module side (This is nothing but Hardware cheating) and Test your module by using AT commands via hyperterminal

Firstly read about RS232 standard and UART connection.

Secondly if you want to detect something in Windows, you should sell your sim300d and buy Huawei modem or other shit :p

Thirdly check in the device manager on which com port is your seral converter working.

Fourthly you should read sim300d datasheet, and find out about autobauding that is supports.

At the end i recomend you not to use hyperterminal. Downloading RealTerm, it's better because you can manually select baud, com port, display settings etc.

HI,
first check wether your USB to serial convertor working or not, just short pin 2 and then start hyper terminal make default setting and type something on screen if its get type means convertor is Ok if there is nothing on screen then ur convertor is bad

when you connect the SIM300 and activate a terminal emulator (such as Hyperterm or Teraterm) make sure you transmit the carriage return character (\r in C) on the end of line. Many modems do not respond to line feed.

The SIM300 is not detected as a device, this feature doesn't exist in a serial connection, you will only see the serial listed in the devices.
You can only check the connection by using a terminal and using the AT command to see if the modem answers.

Check the baud rate setting and com number in the hardware list, set the baud to 9600 and apply the correct settings to the terminal too.
