i have done "talking" with my XBee Pro 900 Wire Antenna (sku: WRL-09097) using X-CTU.

Use the language which you are most comfortable. You will be primarily issuing AT Commands, transmitting and receiving ASCII character strings.

I assume you have a pair of these XBee modules? Have you successfully formed a link between the two?

XBee-PRO® 900/DigiMesh™ 900 OEM RF Modules Manual

According to the product page, the XBee Pro 900 are shipped with the DP multipoint proprietary firmware which should provide out-of-the-box communications, no setup required.

What type of breakout board are you using in conjunction with X-CTU to provide a serial interface?

BigDog

Can use AT command. Actually, for first time use, no need to set. You can use default setting to interfacing with UART 9600 baudrate.
See this XBee Lesson.
