HD44780 customized character

How many characters are possible for HD44780 ?
I've tried the 9th character, but didn't work ...
maybe because of the limit $40 to $7F for user defined graphics ?

and each character has 8 segments...

You can store eight 5x8 characters and four 5x10 characters in CGRAM at one time.

There are 64 bytes of CGRAM storage, with each custom character requires either 8 bytes (5x8) or 16 bytes (5x10).

Each requires 8 bytes of storage if it is a 5x8 character.
