Simple DPDT Switch Question

Hiya,

Im using a 6 pin 12v 20A on-off-on DPDT switch to control an electric window in my car, car is DC 12v and about 20A

The window motor simply switches direction by reversing the polarity to it.

At the moment i have it wired as so

1 4
2 5
3 6

I have pins 1 and 6 joined, and 3 and 4 to form the cross.

Inputs go to 2 and 5 and outputs to the motor 3 and 6.

This all works fine and the window goes up and down etc. But my problem is when the window hits the bottom and can go no further if you keep the switch pressed eg trying to force the motor to carry on it over heats the switch, the standard car switch didnt do this, is there a component i can wire in anywhere to stop it overheating? as im an electronics newbie as simple english as possible lol and precise locations where to wire would be great

thanks for the suggestion i will take a look, i believe you can also do it by wiring a resistor in series with the circuit? i reckon the OEM switch has a resistor in there somewhere that does this, is it feasible to take apart the switch housing and basically cut and resolder that resistor into my circuit? if so where bouts in my circuit would you suggest a resistor would go
 

It is possible but it will not solve your problem and also resistor just waste your power .
In cars they use mechanical solution and when the window goes up the shaft will be released .
In your case if you want solve it with electronic you should sense the current and when it reach to high level then you can send an order to cut the power with relay or triac . with using an atmega8 the cost of this simple control with PCB design is around 14$ and seems beneficial for me.
If you don't care about power you can do these :
1- measure the current that your motor sink from power source.
2- measure the current that your power supply can source.
3- calculate the amount of Resistor that will not effect the necessary current for your motor with considering other connected devices to the power supply.
4- calculate the necessary power for your resistor . W=RI^2

you can select a switch of atleast 60a rating to reduce the haet in switch.

but , you cannot keep on pressing the switch for a longtime when it has reached the target.
