plz guide me
i want to measure ac current using pic microcontroller....does i need electric isolation b/w ac current and pic?? and why??if i a use a zener doid to limit voltage surges.does it serve the purpose

If you want to measure AC parameters, then you have to take care of AC and DC isolation.. or else you end up blowing the entire circuit....

You need an OPTO ISOLATOR circuit between PIC and AC source....

what is your ac voltage?
there are many way for measuring current such as shunt or ct transformer....
for isolation between your measuring device and ac signal you should use ct or hall sensor.

why isolation is needed?what does it do? If it is used to stop voltage surges, can zener diod be used for this purpose

it is not only voltage surge we talk here....

AC voltage cannot be fed to our digital controller boards.. So always you have seen we step down the voltage and convert it to DC and feed the controller board...

AC will literally burn all the conponents of the board... so when you are using AC source and DC source then the isolation is really required...

Hi
May i ask you that what is your measuring method ?
Do you use shunt resistor or resistance divider or etc...?
What is the amount of your AC voltage ?

i m actually measuring ac current (0-3A) i m using a shunt resistor,bridge rectifier,filter circuit and a zener diod.actually i want
to convert the ac current to dc using rectifier and filter circuit before feeding into pic.zener diod is used to is used to stop
voltage surges
