interfacing ps2 mouse to an MC

i have a PS2 optical mouse that i want to interface with my MC.how to get the xy location from the mouse's dsp.and is it possible to get seperate x,y displacements.

thank you.i understood the way it works.

i was reading more about optical mice and found that the dpi=cpi. my mouse is 800dpi rated.does it imply that if i move my mouse by 1inch/dpi (minimum distance)the mouse increments the x by 1(for x movement only)?
