it appears from your description that you may be using the wrong type of battery.
UPS and other standby application batteries are designed for being 'float charged' constantly with only occasional load applied whilst what you are trying to achieve really requires a 'deep cycle' battery type which is more suited to multiple charge/discharge cycles.

hope this assists

Help me....lm317 lead acid battery charger ckt

i'm using lm317 lead acid battery charger circuit. from below ckt ,the 0/p voltage on bat+ must below or equal to 13.5v-while charging the battery(we are using fickle voltage),the battery is keep charging after 13.5vdc ,so we changed 1k resistor(pot) to 500 ohm. but now also voltage keep increasing above 13.9v. so it will overcharge the battery. so plz help me how to solve this ckt.......

@gane26
D4 IN5408 is preventing feedback from the battery
You should remove diode D4
Keep the 1K pot as it is
However you will realise that with mains power failure the battery will slowly discharge through R1, R2 and the pot

Between the LM317 output and the battery there is a diode
While there is a charging current Vbat = Vreg - 0.75
As the charging current returns to zero, Vbat = Vreg that is why you see this difference I guess.
