We use the Industry standard Parasitic Extraction tools like Star-RC & QRC.

What is the basic procedure followed by these tools?

hi Kumar,

can you be more specific? What do u mean by basic procedure.. do u want to know algorithm of this or its like how does these tool extract the parasitics value form the design?

Hi Birdy,
I would like to know how the tool is calculating the RC info from the design.

Rgds,

just to give top level idea. this is how it works

Incase of StarRC, in your nxtgrd files , sheet resitance & cap values will be present for each metal layer & di-electric present in between 2 metal layers.

based on the layout info(ur GDS or milkyway), the tool will know distance between 2 points. so resistance bw those 2 points = length * sheet resiatnce of that metal layer.

If the wire traverse through multiple layer , similar procedure is followed in each layer & total resistance is calculated (based on whether resistor is parallel or series)

based on thickness of metal , distance between layers & di-electric constant --> cap values are determined in similar fashion
