Hello,

I have ByteBlaster MV from Altera,Its not working. The error in quartus is " Unable to Scan the chain" I suspect the problem is in JTAG FRC Cable(10 pin). Can any one tell that what is the ideal length of this cable,Because i am trying to increase the length upto 26-28cm.

Please suggest me whether i am doing correct or not.

Regards
Kiran

Unless strong interferences are present in your system, 26-28 cm (and even more) would work. But in case of doubt, you should try a short cable.

There are two cables involved, the first is the cable from the parallel port to the circuit and the second is the cable from JTAG to the FPGA,
if you want to add an extension i would suggest the parallel port cable because I had problems in the past when i made a programmer that was pluged directly in the parallel port with a long JTAG cable.
I have changed that to a long (1M) extension from the parralel port and a short JTAG cable about 10cm and the problem was soved.
The parallel port is designed to be able to work with long cables so it should be preferred in my view.

Thanks FVM and Alex for your replies.

In 28cm also its working. For your ref my target board is Cyclone IV GX 22 PCIE(X1).
I had connected the cable around 25-30mins. From then onwards its not working.

Is there any issue with the time.

No. Timing is almost uncritical. It's a problem of signal quality, particularly of TCK. The problem also depends on the board design details. Placing series resistors at the Byte Blaster side mostly allows to extend the cable length. But using short cables would be preferred.
