I upgraded my version of HFSS 11 to 13 on Debian Squeeze. Getting it to work was actually a bit easier than version 11, less editing of install scripts. You may or may not know, Ansys has a linux version of HFSS, but they block all unsupported distros although it can work on any. Here is my installation instructions in case anyone searches for them:

HFSS V13 on Debian

HFSS V13 has native Linux support and, as such, it should work on any AMD64 linux distribution. The problem is that Ansys only supports a few select distributions and blocks the program from installing or running on any other distribution. They do this by parsing uname output in a couple scripts. We can simply edit this lines and HFSS works.

First extract the install zip provided by ansys and edit VerifyOS.bash. This script checks your distribution and returns 0 for a positive verification and integers for errors. We can edit the lines that trigger the error for an unsupported OS and return a 0. It appears they use a return value of 2 for an unsupported OS.

Open up VerifyOS.bash, replace every instance of retval=2 with retval=0

Similar edit for the “install” script. It exits if it detects an unsupported OS. Open up 'install' and comment out every instance of:

exit 5

exit 10

exit 11

After installing and setting up your licenses, overwrite the VerifyOS.bash in the HFSS directory with the edited version or else you won't be able to run the program.

Can you help me to install it on Ubuntu, please?

I tried sudo, gksudo, gaining root password and running it under terminal. The installer just doesn't start.

Lost hope to install it on any modern Linux.
There are always problems with libs, especially with windows-port libs for interface.
If I try to register in-package libs that have older version than installed in the system, the system crashes. Seems, they use something extremely outdated with conventional names, producing "dll-hell" like result.
I also couldn't get Windows binary running under Wine :( Interface started with many menu text strings and dialogues lost, solver doesn't start.

You not attentively read the very first post in this topic: there everything is thoroughly painted that, where and as it is necessary to replace. HFSS becomes and without root (sudo etc.). And as it is necessary to consider it a manual on installation for Unix (linux) there necessary packets and their versions are specified.
Installation that for debian that is identical to Ubuntu.

it seems you don't read, reply first, than think... or not even thinking.

IT DOES NOT WORK!

> "VerifyOS.bash. This script checks your distribution and returns 0 for"
no problem to come to this yourself. actually, there are more codes for SUSEs to override. anyway - it is not the only thing to do actually. there's also a &$%( job to make setup run without root.

OK, Done.
A year passed since I've installed it already.

The problem is not with starting installer itself.
!The problem is in obsolete and incompatible libraries!

It simply crashes on modern SUSEs and Ubuntus with library errorcodes. Tried on Ubuntu 9.10x64 and SLES 11, latest Open SUSEs. Don't have RH, cause it's commercial.

Debian testing with a part of libraries from sid (works to this day and doesn't fall, and at you on "ancient" Ubuntu it can not be launched ;-)). You for a start though would provide information, what exactly causes HFSS crash in you?) In other words what error gives out when falling?

", and at you on "ancient" Ubuntu it can not be launched"
Huh!? :-? What is more "ancient", Ubuntu or HFSS 13 ? That was the latest release of Ubuntu the time I've tested it.
And still, it installed but didn't start on any SLES of OpenSUSE dated from 2011 year.

", and at you on "ancient" Ubuntu it can not be launched"
I told you. all the .so libraries found in the package gave an error. Most of them are related to windows API, as I found.
I am not a Linux guru to understand the cause they are not linked correctly after "successfull" installation. I mean, this should be done by installer, but not by the user.

And how about HFSS ? 8-O

You can try to use EDA software on unsupported operating systemens. It might work, or it might fail. That is why the EDA software vendors provide a list of supported and tested platforms.

If you want to use a free Linux, you can try Scientific Linux and CentOS which are both derived from RHEL (same base code, but without the commercial software components).

These errors ask to bring you if you need to launch and work in HFSS under Ubuntu, to try to solve a problem together.
If you simply so decided to deliver and now express the judgement that at you it did not turn out to launch the software which vendor doesn't support these platforms, it not that place.
And so again about the old: what actions cause HFSS crash in you?

Dear Vigort. Why do you always talk about Ubuntu? It is not my fixation. And I don't try to open holy wars here.
That's why I tried to install it on SLES and Open SUSE.
Guess, it is natural for user to expect the software released in 2010 to work in OS released in 2009. At least with updates. And HFSS 13 doesn't work under SLES 11 by default.

"And so again about the old: what actions cause HFSS crash in you?"
Start the installed software. It doesn't start saying variois .so are not found or give errors. My tries to copy and replace system's so's manually with provided with HFSS cause crashes on SLES 11.
I didn't try SLES 9, cause it is officially removed from download.

Of cause we have a package of HFSS licenses. You should be familiar with financing patterns in organisations. If you purchase scientific software, it doesn't mean, commertial OS is included in the purchase.
I hardly believe anyone's buying such software like HFSS with personal cash.

"You can try to use EDA software on unsupported operating systemens."
Dear Volker, please see the contents of the topic again. 1) This is talk is about unsupported things. And my problem it is caused by that: 2)SLES 9 is officially removed from support. It is unavailable for download and it doesn't support(potentially) modern hardware.
I lack experience of solving "library hell" problems under linux. There was question - "how to make it run". Not "how to start the installer". So, people, please be patent before picking on other users. Maybe you just miss the point.

Dear Andryuha, it is not necessary to show the nonsense on a public inspection: 1. if you install a product that shall familiarize with this remarkable document for a start: View attachment ansoft-unixinstall-082009.pdf And if you read it that it was recommended to you several posts above, would find on page 7 (Getting Started 1-3) the following: page1.png. So at what HFSS there doesn't work?

So you also will argue now, what HFSS v13 doesn't work in SLES v.11? Just in case, you won't refute, what SLES is decrypted as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server?

2. I.e. You refuse to provide information, about these errors (on such that my action - I receive the such - that message)? I.e. You persistently continue to bear flood, instead of constructive operation?

3. I nevertheless will dare to give to you advice: Or finish all this flood, or let's try deliver HFSS on your system, but for this purpose you nevertheless should tell all your steps on HFSS installation. Well also learn to read installation guides.
