Hey friends,

I have a gerber file and wondering if I can import the same into OrCAD Layout ( .max file) with the contents of the gerber.

Any hints or ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I think Orcad can import directly from DXF, PLT or Gerbers. If it can't import Gerbers you can use programs like CAM350 to open the Gerbers and export them as PLT or DXF

Thanks Luben111!

However, the conversion is to edit the max file. Exporting or importing from dxf may not serve my purpose.

Some time ago I made a program to read/write/modify Altium PcbDoc files so I don't think it should be so complex to make similar things with MAX format. What you want exactly to import into MAX files? What's the problem to import DXF data in MAX file which is proven to work well?

Hey Nikhil and Luben,

I just have the fabrication files and not .gtd file. Using gerbtool i may just be able to view as individual layers. Any way to combine those?

when i have the layout design in fabrication files(.top, .bot, .drd, .smt etc), importing from dxf or exporting dxf?

Thanks!

If you have the .top, .bot, etc. files (which are Gerber files) you can open them in some gerber tool program (like Cam350, Camtastic in Altium, Orcad also has some gerber tool program). When gerber files opened you can see the board tracks 1:1 like they will appear on the PCB as copper. In fact the Gerber files are the most precise image of the fabricated PCB - "what you see is what you get".

So, once you open the gerber files with some program you can export to DXF. The DXF then could be directly imported into ORCAD max file - in Orcad LAYOUT you go File/Import/DXF
