what is a good textbook or source for designing an n-degree analog filter like butterworth filter. I want to be able to a write the n-degree filter transfore function or imuplse response.

Thanks,

Mamoun

Re: analog filter design

Try the Analog Design, the author is Rashid, i dont remember the name, is really good though a little complex.

Re: analog filter design

If you just want to build a filter that meet your needs whithout going into deep math try Lancaster´s Active Filter CookBook.

Re: analog filter design

To design filters I find it easier to design the filter as a control system. So I sugest you can get a good Control Engineering book, and you can learn some good techniques and analysis that are useful for filter design.

analog filter design

There are lot of good analog filter design text book available. The classic set are "Active and Passive Analog Filter Design" by Huelsman and "Passive and Active Filters" by Wai-Kai Chen. Recently, there also "Design of Analog Filter" by Schaumann, which is based on the most famous "Analog Filter Design" by Van Valkenbug, and "Continuous-time active filter design" by Deliyannis are highly recommended.

Re: analog filter design

Schaumann's book has a very detailed solution manual, available from Oxford Univ Pub. You may want to check out that.

Re: analog filter design

I checked out the Linear Tech filter design program and FilterPro, and feel that the best filter still comes from our own design. For example, FilterPro will tell you to design a bandpass filter by cascading a lowpass and a highpass! Sure this is OK for low-key design, but do you want to tell your boss about this?

Fortunately, hand design is eased much by the availability of Matlab. Anybody needs info on this, post back or drop me a line.

analog filter design

There are monographs with filter order coeficients people have calculated them from decades ago. It simplifies task of determing component values.

"On the Theory of Filter Amplifiers," Wireless Engineer, vol. 7, 1930, pp. 536-541 by Stephen Butterworth (hence the name!)

"Cascade Amplifiers with Maximal Flatness," RCA Review, vol. 5, 1941, pp. 347-362 by V.D. Landon

or use filter softwares to facilitate element values. Nowdays (in modern era) people hate to calculate things manually! People hate Butterworth polynomials.

I am attaching such one for Butterworth for order 1 to 10. Works for all filter topologies of how you want to build a Butterworth filter.

If you want more to tweak (for example Q) then have to follow some rules found in some handbook of filters.

Actually is better to go see a book for them.\

Re: analog filter design

If you need a filter, post the specifics: type (Butterworth, Chebyshev, or Elliptic, or linear phase), (lowpass, BP, etc), frequencies, SwitCap/Opamp-C/Gm-C. I will try to give you a solution, an example solution to similar problem, or Matlab program(s). Good luck.

analog filter design

You can try with Microelectronics Circuits of Sedra/Smith

Re: analog filter design

i agree to the fact that u should know control system design.thats make ur basics strong while designing the filters.i suggest you to go through the books on control system design by any author.infact all of them present the same stuff

Re: analog filter design

Hi,

Go to the Microchip web site at www.microchip.com

or stright to the link at **broken link removed**

There you will find a softwar that will do all for you.

If you found my answer useful, click on the button that says Helped me. ( NO points will be taken from you! )

Good luck.

Re: analog filter design

Hi DoctorX,
I need to design a 5 order Butterworth switched-cap filter , the passband is 22KHz. Would you provide me a Matlab file for such file ? Thanks.
