hello my application uses max232 to intervace a pic16f84 to the RS232 port.
I would like to use the MC1488 instead and I wonder if they are equivalent.
Pinout is different of course and only 2 of the four gates of MC1488 will be used.

The MC1488 is a quad line driver. The MAX232 has two drivers and two receivers. The MAX232 generates the negative voltage needed, using a switched capacitor circuit. The MC1488 doesn´t generate it and must have a negative power supply (Vee). Just take a look at the MC1488´s datasheet.

Standard MC1488 also needs a positive supply higher than 5V, MC14C88 runs from +/- 5V. In has been widely used before MAX232 came up, now it can be found mainly in multi RS232 instruments. It's usually supplemented by the MC1489 RS232 receiver.
