Can "BERCODING" apply to QAM?

Hi,

I would like to know can "BERCODING" apply to QAM? Because When i checked on MATLAB toolbox, it said that BERCODING is apply for QPSK. So if this does not apply to QAM, what else QAM can use to return upper bound value of the BER?
