I've just got the title of my big project:
(Superheterodyne Transceiver) Design of IF VCO RFID application at 868 MHz using CMOS Technology. 8O
Now I'm quite blur on where to begin. Can someone pls tell where should I start in this research. Your replies are very much expected and appreciated.
 

Start with Razavi's RF Microelectronics Book for understanding RFIC; also after that rake a look at:

www.circuitsage.com

I think in your application low power design (with tolerable Phase Noise!) is the most challenge....

Try to figure out the following:

Is it a ring oscillator or an LC oscillator?
Does the system architecture demand a single-ended or a differential oscillator?

What is the maximum allowable power dissipation?

What is the phase noise specification?

What is the supply voltage you are designing this VCO for?

What would be the gain of the VCO?

Frequency tuning range?

Do you require individual phases out of the oscillator or do you just need one (differential) output?

When you hve figured these out, you would be on your way.

About the tool concern, you probably need the HSPICE for transient simulation and SpectreRF/@ds for the frequency domain such as phase noise simulation.

Why Superheterodyne? How you expect your bulding blocks' performances and are they tough? Systematic view is very important in RF design.
