What is the purpose of reset and what happens to if we press reset for IC's ie wht ll be the intial state of each pin and wht ll be state of each pin after pressing reset.

When reset is pressed, the program will go back to the initial state just before the program runs. Then, it will start to run from there. One of the purpose is to restart your circuit when it got hang.

The idea of a reset is to put an IC to a PRE DETERMINED, KNOWN state so you can rely on it. The datasheet usually provides information about 'power on' or 'reset' states of each part of the IC.

If you want to know to which state the pins go after pressing the reset, then you need to go through the data sheet. For example, most of the microcontrollers/PICs the same pins can be configured as both inputs and outputs. But by default, they act as input pins. In the code, you might program those pins as outputs and drive some ouputs. But after reset, they will be configured to their default state, which means they will act as inputs.
For your question, the initial state of the pins before and after the reset will be the same...

In general reset means an IC or system is forced to xit from running state and go to some predefined initial condition. Example reset of a PC will take processor to before boot state i.e the state when PC was ust put ON
