Hello for the following stepper motor, i assume that the maximum current allowable in any winding is
6/18.5 = 324mA?

-Presumably , the stepper motor saturates when driven with current above this level?

The stepper motor is as follows:- (UBB1/5, 6V, 18.5 Ohms per phase)

No I don't think so, but over time the stepper might get hot and running it hard might reduce it's life time.
I didn't get access to the pdf file you linked to.

Did you notice, that the motor performance diagrams distinguish between 30 % and 100 % duty cycle operation?
I read from this info, that the "rated voltage" shouldn't be applied with 100 % d.c. Apparently all data sheet
data is based on constant voltage operation. Operating the motor with constant current involves different
conditions. Regarding maximum current, you should also consider a possible danger of rotor demagnetization.
I suggest to contact the manufacturer in this regard.
