is it possible to run PIC18F4520 at 3v?

The datasheet of PIC18F4520 states:

"Standard devices with Enhanced Flash memory, designated with an "F" in the part number (such as PIC18F2420), accommodate an operating VDD range of 4.2V to 5.5V. Low-voltage parts, designated by "LF" (such as PIC18LF2420), function over an extended VDD range of 2.0V to 5.5V."

I was unable to source the "LF" version in small quantities for my testing. So I ran my test circuit using PIC18F4520 at 3v and the circuit functions well. But since the datasheet states the supply voltage requirement to be atleast 4.5v I would like to know if running PIC18F4520 (F version) at 3v will cause any issues in the long run.

Well if it could run reliably at 3v then why would Microchip go to the trouble of producing a LF version ?

It may well run ok for you, but when operating outside manufacturers specifications you cannot really expect it to perform 100%

Also see the Electrical Specs in the datasheet and the Oscillator frequency charts - even the LF version can only just do over 4 meg at 3v.

Well its true. I thought the same too before i ran the test circuit (btw the test circuit is running at 8MHz :eek: ). Maybe its because my application isnt very processor hungry but the test circuit has been running for days now without fail. I was wondering if anyone ever ran a PIC under the specified voltage and got stable results or am I just lucky? :roll:

Just hope you are not a life support system designer then :lol:
 

You can do that make sure before starting this u have checked all the specification details about microcontroller. Generally PIC controller works 3 to 5.5 v without fails.

But u need to make sure adc sensing or some other stuff which u r using internal in microcontroller.

I have run many non-LF chips down to 2.5v. just give it a try and what do you have to lose?
