How does DTMF 8870 detect numbers?

in my project I use dtmf 8870 to detect numbers ( I push from a cell phone).
I searched for real data about DTMF and how they do it .. I read the datasheet some of it I understood and some of it didnt but I need more info about him...
like how he does it since he has two inputs in+ and in 1 and from what I understood it had a gap of 110Hz ( but why he needs it and why 110 hz ?)

+ I saw a lot of math- I dont need it - I just need a simple- middle high explanation about him..
