I am getting an unclear voice sounding on the general purpose wide band receiver when I transmit with the 40M transceiver that I built, and sometimes the signal isn't there at all. Could that be becaause I used silicon diodes (1N4148's) instead of germanium ones in the mixers (diode ring modulators)?

Re: mixer question

It should not make any difference as long as the LO power is high enough to turn the diode full on and full off.
