RSSI in 802.11a/b/g

Most of the 802.11a/b/g/n transceiver provide RSSI signal for baseband and MAC chip. Why BB/MAC chip need this signal? What will BB/MAC do with this RSSI signal? When will the BB/MAC sample the RSSI value?

Regards,
HM
