I am trying to design a basic elevator controller using FPGA but i just cant seem to gain a starting point any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have never experienced about vhdl before, find a book for yourself and give a start...
Circuit Design with VHDL(V. Pedroni) is good book, if you're newbie..

Good luck

Pedroni's one is a good book and i consider it from time to time.

It is not suitable for an experienced developer though.

I personally prefer "HDL Chip Design" by Douglas J. Smith, although it is quite old.

There a couple of newer books that are interesting, too...
