SDR transreceiver Architecture

Hi,

Why do most SDR transceiver architectures use a simple mixer at the receiver section & complex (I & Q) mixer at the transmitter section? What is the basis of choice for different types of mixer stages to be used in tx & rx sections of an SDR?
