Hi all ,
Iam doing a new project on FPGA . I used to make a port on the FPGA for debugging and connect it to PC using serial or parallel interfaces to debug the code while it's running using simple GUI (VB) .
Now I thought that , why don't I use the JTAG port which is implemented in the FPGA as a debugging port and make an intrface board to connect it using serial interface .
1- Has any body did it before ?
2- Do you know if the synthesizer will allow to assign to the JTAG pins
3- Is there a special commands in the VHDL to write to the JTAG port ?
4- Do you have a sch. for interface board from JTAG to serail RS232 and vise versa

thanks

Hi Vonn,
I haven''t tried it but it's possible to do hardware debugging using the JTAG specially with the Xilinx FPGA familly i'm used with. To have more information just go to their web site and you will find all you need. And by the way there is a xilinx software product named chipscope that anable you to use your PC as a logical analyzer.
God luck

I'm not totally clear on your application, however you can undertake a certain
amount of board-level hardware debug with the free Buzz tool from JTAGLive.

see .. www.jtaglive.com

You will need aXilinx cable (parallel or USB) and WebPack/ISE v11.1 or higher but after that you can start taking control of pins via the boundary-scan register.

They also do some more comprehensive add-on modules but you pay for them..

Good luck

Barry

One more tool for circuit debugging via JTAG/boundary-scan is TopJTAG Probe **broken link removed**. With TopJTAG Probe it is possible to view pin states (i.e. it works like slow logic analyzer) and to control pin states to check interconnects, light LEDs etc.
