I saw someone take 12VAC 50Hz from an auto-transformer instead via insulated transformer for a test on his circuit board using Pic controller and included small power electronic devices ?
Which bad things could happen in this case ?
Thanks !!!

Nothing is going to be wrong, unless you turn it to high voltage.

My thought: they may be checking their circuits (creating fault conditions)

Untill you supply the specified voltage circuit, (either 12v or 5V) nothing will go wrong.

No. I saw him do that and his older colleague warn him that he should use insulated transformer for replacing. The older colleague explain that he is using auto transformer that take 220VAC from wall socket, he said about static electric and it may caused damage to electronic components on the board (if hand touching ...) ???
Is that true and how damage happen if he supply that voltage 12VAC from that auto transformer ?

It isn't the voltage from the transformer that's the problem, think of what happens when the device is connected to something else that has a ground connection or even worse, someone touches part of it. Static will not build up on a circuit connected through an auto-transformer because it has a conductive discharge path back to the wall socket.

BUT, depending on which way the transformer is wired, the 0V line of the circuit could be wired DIRECTLY to the live side of the incoming mains supply which is not recommended for health reasons. (it can kill you!)

Brian.
