convert float to bcd

Hello -

I am somewhat new to VHDL, but I have some past experience with discrete digital design.

I would like to take a BCD number that is in the std_logic_vector format and convert it into ieee single float format in order to use the number as an input to the Xilinx Floating Point IP Core.

I am starting in BCD because it was pretty easy to get into that format from my input device (PS2 Keyboard). And it decodes well for my output (7 seg displays).

I am having trouble understanding how to convert my BCD number into the float format required for the IP core and then back into BCD for easy output.

I searched the threads for info - but nothing seemed to address this question directly.

Thanks for any suggestions / pointers.
