i am working on my first pcb layout and had a question about drill sizes, i am making a footprint for a molex connector and the recommended hole size is 34mil +/- 2mil. so when i choose a drill size what size should i choose, because all holes are plated through. i plan on purchasing my board from h ttp://4pcb.com/ and i can't seem to find there drill sizes listed. is there like a standard size that i should just be aware of. thanks for your help

drill sizes finished sizes

Choose whatever hole size you need. The fab will match it as closely as possible. If there are tolerence limitations for a hole or special route, put those as a note on a drill drawing.

Be aware that you should specifiy FINISHED hole size. The fab will drill the hole a couple of mils larger than your specified finished size to account for plating.

pcb standard drill sizes

Also at 4pcb, prototypes are drilled to the nearest 5-thousants of an inch. 10, 15, 20.....
Have fun!

drilling hole size lead component

If the datasheet for the components have any recommended pcb layout all values can be used as given in that but if not then from the pacakge values you can create
the component with corresponding oversizes

lead to drill size

what is the generally practised pad/hole ratio ? one of my TH components has a recommended hole size of 32 mils. what should be the pad diameter minimum ?

standard drill sizes and tolerances

It doesn't matter if the hole size is 5 mils larger when prototyping. Most PCB manufacturers has limited tool sets. but I would say that non of the pcb maufacturers has all size of the driller. they will us the same toll to make the 36 and 37 mil. Maybe next time you should try EzPCB :)

how to choose drill size

A rule of thumb is to make the pad size twice the drill hole size, so the pad should be at least 64 mils.
Unless space is at a premium.

pcb english drill sizes

The smallest thourgh-hole size I used to do is 8 mils. For the size, you should concern about the current. The standard could be check from IPC-2221.

Please check:

sorry please check in IPC-2222. You can download from this

pcb standard drill size

smaller drill size always means higher price. Normally, size bigger than 12mil is called as standard ones, which means no extra money applied to.

standard drill sizes pcb

Normally what we follow is lead size + tolerance = Finished hole dia.

e.g : if component lead size is 32 mils then the finished hole dia will be
32 + 10 = 42 mils.

i.e after plating your drill size will be 42 mils which will help in soldering the lead also.

Hope this helps.

thanks
