I recently heard that a city can have a maximum 200 number of FM stations if 88-108 mHz is the broadcast range of FM ? How is it so ?

thx in advance

i think a single FM channel hav a bandwidth of 150kHz. so keeping gaurd band as well u can calculate them.

but even it can be more if u wanna reuse the frequency, means if some channels are only specified to certain areas of the city only.

with my tuner quite high range I can hardly ear two radios if they are closer than 0.2 MHz
so 108-88 = 20 MHz
5 radios per MHz gives you maximum 100 radios.

Max.BW for FM using 15KHz modulating freq. and 75KHz deviation including guard band would be 200KHz. Hence in a 20MHz BW(88-108MHz), a max.of 100 stations can be accomodated without interference

It depends on the country you are talking about, but in the US broadcast stations are assigned frequencies in exact multiples of 100 kHz, and only the odd multiples are used (100.1, 100.3, 100.5, etc.). So using this criteria, you also get 100 stations maximum.

In europe (well, most countries at least) odd and even multiples are used, so there you'd get 200 stations. Though, just a theoretical number, as you probably won't see two FM stations broadcasting separated by just 100 kHz within the same area.
