Hello everyone,

I am trying to design a simple Analog IC PLL for a school project, can anyone suggest a place to start(i.e. ebooks to read, tutorials, etc.). I understand only the very basic elements of a PLL(i.e. PD, filter, VCO) and would like to get the actual details and implementation to help me with my design. Any type of help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Look at the data sheets and application notes for one IC versions. Several manufacturers offer them on the web sites. Search for NE562 as one example part.

Other old one PLL is the 4046 CMOS. Very easy to setup.

Phase Lock Loops and Frequency Synthesis. Venceslav F. Kroupa is a really good book if ure planning on self learning. IEEE Xplore has many papers on monolithic implementation of RF PLLs.

You should check also the books from Gardner, Wolaver and Blanchard about PLL design. Razavi has 2 books as well

razavi is best.

this site is extremely good for beginers
Many papers can not find their links now!

you can see the datatsheet of LM565(PLL),search for it

As to me, i think you should first read some book on it completely, then if you meet with some practical questions ,you can search in google for papers about it!Ther are a lot of paperson it published by IEEE

Recommended Books:
1. for starting point: "Phase Locked Loops Design, Simulation and Applications" by Roland E. Best. and "Design of Analog CMOS Integrated Circuits" By B. Razavi
2. for design stage "Wireless CMOS frequency Synthesizer Design"

By the way this topic is very hard to cover by one or two books and the design guides found in several papers like those available through IEEE or Circuitsage is a must to be a good PLL designer!

BEST!

Here's a very readable, concise description that is not overly 'technical' -

Hi,

If you have decided on your specs then you can look for papers which confine to your specs.

If you are starting it fresh ,...like deriving a specs ...learning the concept then you need to first read few books. As mentioned by people over here Razavi is the best. Also I suggest first make an analysis of various tutorials on PLL design. You need to know one thing ...regarding topologies in your design. The best way to choose a topology is to know the spec and which suites your specs the best ...

Cheers,
